Internation Coastal Cleanup 2011

On 17th September, we had our yearly participations in International Coastal Cleanup Singapore(ICCS), at the Lim Chu Kang mangrove swamp. This time with new members joining us for ICCS.

Our Conservation IG members sacrificed one of their Saturdays morning to participate in International Coastal Cleanup where they help to make a difference to their environment and the habitats of the wildlife.

Debris from our waste such as styroform, oil drums, fish nets could lead to entanglement in marine life and also causing them to mistake our waste as food.

Huge thanks to everyone in helping to remove the debris from the mangrove.

Though there are not many barrels remove this year, but we still managed to remove 206.5 kg worth of trash. The amount of rubbish that was removed by volunteers in Singapore at each location can be view at http://coastalcleanup.wordpress.com/results-2011/. Well done everyone in helping to protect our shoreline. Do join us next year for ICCS and help make our shoreline a cleaner place for eveyone.

Eco-Flea Market

RP’s Eco Flea Market is back!

Many of us are very fortunate, and are able to afford stuffs like nice clothes, iPods, MacBooks, story books etc . Even though we are able to afford all this, we mustn't forget that there are people who unable to afford the things which has become necessities to us.

Parents always think of their child's wants, before their own, and wish to provide the best for their child. However, due to financial issues, it isn't always possible for them to fulfill their children's desires. If we are able to help them and contribute to helping our environment, why not?

Internal Collection is from now till 31st August 2011 @ Republic Polytechnic Collection Point

The items collected will be given to low income families, followed by RP staff and students. ( The rest of it will be given to the Salvation Army, or are recycled)

Welcome Tea 2011

For this year's welcome tea, we have Lim Yuan Yi to organize the event, with support from the seniors and year 2s. We had a video, a speech, food and fun games and activities prepared for them.

Video

The video was done by Yu Lin. She had just started working on the video 1 month before the actual day. It wasn't easy to make a video as you need to match it with words, music, background sound and most importantly bring the message across. Even though in the end the video was not perfect, the effort and time she's willing to put in is something that most people admire and wish to possess.

Speech

A speech was done by Amy Choong (our advisor) and Lim Jing Kai ( Our head of public relation, 2010). Amy's speech is about why do we have Conservation IG, and why do we care about our environment (educational speech), while Jing Kai's speech is more related to what our IG had done in the past till the upcoming events. This year we also have our senior Alena Huang , Chew Yao Jie and Herman Seah to share their experience and what have they learnt in IG.

Fun Games and Activities

This year the games was planned by Louis Lee and Lim Yuan Yi. They prepared six games, but were only able to play three games due to time constraints (I guess we have to wait till TICE).

We hope that all of you enjoyed the games prepared by them~

Food

I don't want to say this, but there is shortage of food~ I am very sorry about it, it is not that we are stingy about food. It's about food wastage, we always tried to control the amount of food wastage thus, it is important to inform us about your attendance so we can cater the right amount of food for you all~ ^.^

Background knowledge about food waste:

Food waste is one of Singapore's main problem in waste management. As it contains a lot of moisture, our incineration plant will have to put in more energy to burn all these food wastage.

(This contributes to waste of energy)

the IG is not just about one person; it's about everyone. Everybody can have a part to play in treasuring the things around us. A little consideration from people, private sector and public could contributes great help for our nature.

SLA 2011

The annual "Student Life Activity(SLA)" is back again.

This year we have Joan Peh and Tan Siew Tang to help design our Conservation IG booth and gift, Lim Yuan Yi to design the bookmark and photo album, and Yeo Chee Hiong to make our SLA Video.

Our designers have put in a lot of effort to complete this master piece. Even though, our booth design was simple, it has lots of tone and shading to brings out the vibrant colours of our nature.

(We also make a point to conserve our resources by keeping the designs after using and used blue tag instead of scotch tape, so that we can reuse the materials)

Photo Album

This year we had a new idea to showcase our IG , that is to have a photo album which shows our IG's past year events. This photo album will serve to preserve the memories of each generation of Conservation IG activities and members.

Having so many events, it is a difficult task to consolidate and put it in the photo album when we are racing against the time. Even though we did not manage to put over hundreds photo inside it, our designer have made the effort to design the pages before putting the photos in.

Bookmarks

The Bookmark idea was raised by Amy Choong (our Advisor) and improved by Lim Yuan Yi.

The design of bookmarks include environmental quotes, address of our IG blog and printed background.

Gift

Tan Siew Tang and Joan Peh have came up with the idea of having seeds in a used plastic cup and gift it to people whose willing to join our IG. The plastic cup and seed were placed within a bag made from magazine and gifted it to people whose wiling to join our IG. The idea of this gift is to allow us to see and appreciate whatever we have.(Everything around us has potential to be refused or recycled)

Our Crew

Thanks to all our IG members, this year we managed to get over 60 people to join. This means that there are still a lot of nature-lovers in RP, and they are willing to make a difference to improve our environment.

International Coastal Cleanup Singapore (Actual Day)

On 11th of September, we had our yearly contribution to International Coastal Cleanup Singapore(ICCS), at the Lim Chu Kang mangrove swamp.

Our Conservation IG members, together with a group of CE helpers had sacrificed one of their Saturdays to participate in International Coastal Clean up where they could personally make a difference and see the amount of trash that accumulates along the shore line.

Marine debris will degrades the beauty of our coastal environment and cause entanglement to the marine creatures......

Everyone have worked to clear up all the marine debris that they have seen on the shoreline~

Lots of barrels have been found during the cleanup~!!!!!!!

Hey thanks to everyone after tabulating, a total of 325.3kg of marine debris have been collected !!!! XD

—International Coastal Cleanup Singapore (ICCS) is an annual event conducted in 70 -100 countries, coordinated by the US-based agency.

The programme aims to remove and collect data on the debris from the shorelines, waterways and beaches of the world's lakes, rivers and oceans. This information serves to educate the public on marine debris issues and to encourage positive change by submissions to governmental and international organisations that will reduce debris in waterways and enhance aquatic environments.

“Our Little Calophyllum”

Staffs and students from Republic Polytechnic as well as our outgoing members from Conservation Interest Group planted a ‘Calophyllum Soulattri’ as part of the Green Wave initiative. With the help of a few contractors and our thoughtful school gardener, we planted the tree just next to the school.

Filled with both excitement and enthusiasm, our fellow school mates started to learn more on the tree and its uses. A normal common tree it may seem, many found it amusing that the tree is listed as critically endangered, and its medicinal values. Now after the official ceremony, the school’s gardener will continue in taking good care of the tree, however, we won’t leave it all to the gardeners! From time to time, we’ll log our observations, and care for the tree. It was a great day to know we’ve planted an endangered tree just next to the school.

Everyone learnt on the tree itself and also the importance of tree from our lovely advisors, and also the way and importance of gardening from our caring gardener. With those in mind, I’m sure everyone present will remember in their hearts to care and cherish the nature. And I hope we’ll get to engage and spread the awareness to more students and staffs! On the next few paragraphs, I’ll share more on the tree and the importance of trees!

Calophyllum Soulattri is a species of flowering plant in the Clusiaceae family. It is found in the Northern Territory of Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The tree, known locally as Bintangor Bunut, is identified as critically endangered in the Singapore Red Book. Several of these trees are planted or found at Chek Jawa, Pulau Ubin, Botanic Gardens Jungle, Bukit Timah and Seletar.

The timber was considered the best of the Calophyllum species and used in masts, spars and planking. Some considered it better than teak in being more elastic and harder. The gummy resin is considered poisonous to dogs. The resin and parts of the tree has various traditional medicinal uses; anti-bacteria uses, cures certain skin issues.

Trees are an important component of the nature because of their prevention of erosion and the provision of a weather-sheltered ecosystem in and under their foliage. They also play an important role in producing oxygen and reducing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as moderating ground temperatures. They are also elements in providing us with our needs of medicinal values, materials (wood), food and many of more.

Conservation Month – Recycling Team

Recycling Challenge

The recycling challenge, conducted in conjunction with Conservation Month, was a game where participants are all given a bag filled with both recyclable and non-recyclable items. They would be given exactly 60 seconds to sort the items into the 2 different black bins in front of them, mainly the recyclable and non-recyclable.

On the actual day itself, there were a total of 30 participants who took part in the recycling challenge which I thought was a very good start in spreading the knowledge of sorting out their rubbish before throwing them into the chute. The rubbish would then be sent to the incinerator plants in Singapore to be burned and deposited at Pulau Semakau. On the second day, there were a total of 14 participants. Although there were not many people who participate, I still think that it is a good try.

Overall, I feel that this recycling challenging was a good one as we were able to promote recycling through this game. It was also a meaningful game which I believe that most of the participant would feel and the top scorer for this game was 36 out of 37.

I personally look forward to this game again in the future.

Recycling carnival games booth

For the recycling carnival booths, we had various activities going on together with the energy and nature sub-groups activities. We had 4 booths while 1 other activity going on on stage. For the 4 booths, we were aiming for creating awareness for the environment through games such as jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles, word search and “spot the difference”.

For all the games, each of them had a meaning behind them. The word search - it was to find words related to recycling or conserving. By doing so, some people might get more familiar to the words commonly used for recycling such as reduce, reuse, and recycle. For the next game, “spot the difference”, players were asked to identify the recyclable or non – recyclable items in the picture.

This mini game would familiarize the students on what can be recycled, what cannot be recycled. The last game comprises of jigsaw puzzles which are made from recyclable material and with pictures which carries a conservation message.

Lastly we had the crossword puzzle where the questions would give the students some knowledge on conservation. The response towards our 2 days event was better than expected and we probably had fulfilled our objectives in doing this as more and more people came and support our booths.

Bayer International Youth Environmental Programs

Ever thought of conservation ideas that you think are brilliant but have no clue where to realise it? Hear from our very own RP Conservation IG students how their participation in two separate Bayer international youth environmental programs has transformed them. Mr Jasper Soh (final year DENV student, SAS- President, Conservation IG 08/09) was one of the Bayer Young Environmental Envoys. He will share with you his experience from the week-long program in Germany. Ms Jackeline Tay (final year DMTS student, SAS –Publicity Manager, Conservation IG 08/09) was one of the Singapore representatives in the Eco-Minds Youth Forum. She will share with you her experience from the program in New Zealand. Other Conservation IG students will also share with you what is in store for you during the Annual Conservation Month held in August 2009.

Sungei Buloh Trip

Recently, we had a trip to Sungei Buloh which was held on 12th June 2009. During the trip we saw a lot of things that we have never encountered in our busy life in the urban area. So, we took our time to appreciate the nature and took a lot of pictures of it. This is the main purpose of our trip and we even gave extra 1 DA of CE points for the submission of photos + 100 words.

3 Singapore students to study Iceland’s icebergs

Three Singapore youths will be going on a study research trip to Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Iceland, as part of the HSBC/NYAA Earthwatch Project. These youths, Tan Zhirong (student at National University of Singapore), Lin Junying (National Junior College graduate about to embark on university education at London’s Imperial College) and Zhan Daowei (graduate of Singapore Polytechnic) are among the winners of the annual Youth Environmental Awards organised by Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC) and National Youth Achievement Award Council (NYAA). There is a total of 6 winners for this year’s awards, including students from Shuqun Secondary School, Raffles Institution, Nanyang Girls’ High School, Republic Polytechnic (- Soh Zhi Hao Jasper (RP conservation IG President 08/09, 3^rd year DENV student) was awarded the HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental (Merit) Award 2009) and NUS.

- Six young environmentalists (three winners, three merit award recipients) were recognized for their outstanding contribution towards environmental protection and nature conservation at this event.

- Soh Zhi Hao Jasper (RP conservation IG President 08/09, 3^rd year DENV student) was awarded the HSBC/NYAA Youth Environmental (Merit) Award 2009.

- Sabrina Choo (RP Conservation IG Secretary 08/09, 3^rd year DBIO student) was shortlisted for final selection interview.

- Other RP representatives include: Tay Jit Ling Jackline, (RP Conservation IG Publicity Manager 08/09, 3^rd year DMTS student) and Kek Siyu Rachel, (RP Conservation IG Secretary 09/10, 2^nd year DMTS student).

RP makes it to the finals of the Singapore Junior Water Prize (SJWP)

The SJWP (http://soe.np.edu.sg/sjwp/) is a national competition to pick a winning team to represent Singapore to vie for the international Stockholm Junior Water Prize in Sweden. Like the Stockholm Junior Water Prize, the SJWP aims to promote awareness and interest in water and environmental issues among young people. The competition is organised by Lien Foundation and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and supported by the Public Utilities Board (PUB).

After months of hard work, the RP team made it to the finals and was awarded the Merit Award with their project: Removal of Arsenic through the Absorption of Tropical Ferns. The five other teams in the finals are: Hwa Chong Institution, , Raffles Institution, NUS High School of Math & Science, Temasek Polytechnic, Dunman High School.

Three S'pore youth go in search of green solutions at forum in New Zealand

Finding a solution to environmental changes that threaten to derail decades of progress, and securing energy supplies.

That's what 25 envoys from nine countries will be discussing during a biennial environmental youth programme in New Zealand next week.

Among the students taking part will be three from Singapore.

Ahead of their departure, Jeremy Koh spoke with two of them to find out what they plan to achieve at the forum.

These are exciting but perhaps frightening times.

On the one hand, new technologies are opening up worlds of opportunities for a growing number of people across the globe.

But on the flip side, global warming and other environmental changes threaten to derail decades of progress.

And while politicians haven't been very successful in addressing these challenges, perhaps fresh minds can.

And that's why German pharmaceutical company Bayer has teamed up with the United Nations Environment Programme to organise the biennial Eco-Minds forum in New Zealand for students from the Asia Pacific region.

19-year-old Tan Hui Ling who just completed her A levels will be one of the three Singapore representatives.

"I've been doing environmental work in my own community, which is Aljunied Hougang constituency, but it's more of a Singapore-based thing so I'll like to explore further and go for this forum to see what other country delegates are doing in their own countries."

Prior to taking part in the forum, Hui Ling had to submit an environmental proposal for selection.

So what does she hope to achieve in New Zealand?

"Probably the other Bayer delegates will have done some environment work in their communities, so hearing from their experience and how they carry out their projects, probably getting some new ideas from there and trying out in my own community."

Another Singapore representative at the forum will be Republic Polytechnic student Jackeline Tay.

She hopes to bring a fresh perspective to environmental challenges.

Students have a lot of imagination, and from imagination we bring into reality.

About 2000 RP students and staff joined more than 2000 participants from 20 secondary schools to collect and construct the giant mosaic using 106,060 plastic bottles from a total of 133,326 collected. The mosaic, which covers an area roughly the size of five-and-a-half badminton courts at RP’s Sports Complex building in Woodlands, aims to draw public attention to the need for energy conservation and recycling.

The event, held as part of pre-publicity efforts for World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour programme, which will take place on the evening of 28 March 2009, was graced by Guest of Honour Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Mayor, South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources. The event, held as part of pre-publicity efforts for World Wide Fund for Nature’s (WWF) Earth Hour programme on 28 March 2009, was graced by Guest of Honour Dr Amy Khor Lean Suan, Mayor, South West District and Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
Mayor Khor completed the giant mosaic when she and representatives from RP and the secondary schools simultaneously placed the last bottles in position.
The project is the brainchild of Soh Zhi Hao, Jasper and Choo Li Qi, Sabrina, both, third year students from the School of Applied Science and members of the Republic Polytechnic Conservation Interest Group.
“Republic Polytechnic's 100,000 plastic bottles challenge is a part of RP's efforts to engage the community around us to combat climate change and global warming together. If everyone contributes a little each, it will accumulate to make a huge difference,” said Mr. Soh.

Republic Poly constructs giant mosaic from plastic bottles

Republic Polytechnic has achieved a Singapore Book of Records listing for the largest mosaic ever made from plastic bottles here.

About 4,000 people had constructed the mosaic using over 106,000 plastic bottles.

The mosaic covers an area roughly the size of five-and-a-half badminton courts.

The effort was part of pre-publicity efforts for the World Wide Fund for Nature's Earth Hour programme tomorrow.

The aim's to draw public attention to the need for energy conservation and recycling.

So after the mosaic is dismantled after Earth Hour, Republic Poly will be disposing of the bottles in an environment-friendly manner.

It'll be carted away by a recycling contractor to be reduced to flakes.

These flakes will then be processed into yarn, which can be woven and made into clothes.

Republic Polytechnic’s Conservation Interest Group students selected to represent Singapore at the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (Germany) & the 3rd Eco-Minds Asia Pacific Forum (Auckland and Rotorua, New Zealand)

In June 2008, eight Republic Polytechnic (RP) students from the Conservation Interest Group (Zeng Huiqi, Yvonne Chang Hui Xian, Loh Peiyu Meryl, Chew Shyh Shyurng Derek, Tay Jit Ling Jackeline, Sabrina Choo, Soh Zhi Hao, Jasper and Muhammad Fareezal Bin Mohamed Idros) submitted their environmental related proposals to Bayer South East Asia Pte Ltd. Six of them were eventually shortlisted to attend a three day Eco-camp held in July this year at the National University of Singapore.

During the camp, thirteen shortlisted envoys from various Junior Colleges and tertiary institutes visited Sungei Buloh and the Tropical Marine Science Institute on St. John’s Island. Different environmental issues were shared and discussed by various distinguished speakers, after which, the envoys presented their individual project ideas on promoting environmental protection in Singapore to the panel of distinguished judges for their consideration.

The RP envoys impressed the judges with their commitment and passion for the environment and eventually two out of the six RP finalists were selected to represent Singapore at the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy- Germany (Nov 2008) and the 3rd Eco-Minds Asia Pacific Forum to be held in Auckland and Rotorua, New Zealand (May 2009). On 30 September 2008, Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Environment and Water Resource presented the awards to the finalists at the Awards ceremony held at The Fullerton Hotel.

Here’s a summary of proposals presented by the six finalists:

Yvonne Chang Hui Xian, first year SAS Diploma in Biomedical Sciences student

Project title: Bring you own utensils and containers day.

The campaign will reinforce the message of re-using and reducing the use of non-biodegradable materials. Other by encouraging students to use their own lunch boxes and metal utensils, ishe suggested that a surcharge can be imposed by canteen operators to students/staff requesting for disposable containers and utensils. Alternatively, discounts can be given to those bringing their own containers or utensils.

Sabrina Choo, second year SAS student, Diploma in Biotechnology

Project Title: Bring your own utensils day.

Her project focuses on education through poster and having a reward system for those who bring their own utensils.

Muhammad Fareezal Bin Mohamed Idros, second year SAS student, Diploma in Biomedical Sciences

Project Title: “waste” to “wow”.

Make use of recyclable materials from trash to make something creative and innovative.

Chew Shyh Shyurng, first year SAS student, Diploma in Environmental Science

Project Title: The old one how?

He suggested promoting the reuse and recycling of old electronic items to prevent them from ending up in landfills. The mode of publicity would be by reaching out to general public and schools to spread the message of recycling electronic items.

Soh Zhi Hao, Jasper, second year SAS student, Diploma in Environmental Science

Project Title: The 100,000 plastic bottles challenge.

He proposed to co-operate with schools in Woodlands region through a competition to collect 100,000 recyclable plastic bottles. After the collection, the plastic bottles will be transformed to into an art display piece before recycling it.

Tan Jit Ling Jackeline, second year SAS student, Diploma in Material Science

Project Title: Republic Polytechnic’s Eco picnic

The project aims to educate the public on recyclables and non-recyclables in a fun picnic and bazaar which also brings the community closer to nature.

About BYEE & Eco-Minds

Bayer is the first company in the world to enter into long-term partnership with the United Nations Environment programme (UNEP) in the area of youth and environment. Each year, youth leaders from all over world, including Singapore, are selected for the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy (BYEE) and are given the opportunity to travel to Germany on an all expense paid trip to learn more about environmental best practices and at the same time form networks with like-minded young people.

Every two years, Bayer and UNEP organise Eco-Minds, an Asian Pacific forum which brings 27 tertiary participants from nine Asia Pacific countries (the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China, and Korea) to work on solving sustainable development issues relevant to the entire region.

THIRTEEN Singaporean teenagers (6 of which are from RP, conservation IG) have been picked as environmental envoys by pharmaceutical company Bayer this year.

This is the largest number of envoys from Singapore since the Bayer programme begun here in 2002.

Three of the most outstanding among the envoys, aged between 17 and 18, will represent Singapore in a week-long field trip to Germany in Nov. They will join some 50 others from 17 countries to learn about how the government, industry and people practise environmental protection.

The youths were selected through a nationwide competition. Another three will take part in an Asia Pacific forum in New Zealand in May next year to discuss energy sustainability.

Dr Amy Khor, Senior Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment and Water Resources, said at the award ceremony on Tuesday, 'Safeguarding the environment is undoubtedly a never-ending mission which requires persistence and determination. More importantly, we need to inculcate the right values and mindset in our younger generation.'

'Educational programmes for youths like Bayer Young Environmental Envoy and Eco-Minds, therefore, have an important role to play.'

'Not only do these programmes provide young people with a wider perspective on environmental issues at hand but also help them to cultivate the ability to think of ideas which would benefit the environment holistically. Such programmes are also networking opportunities for youths to exchange ideas with their counterparts from other walks of life.'

International Coastal Cleanup 20 September 2008

We started off at the One Stop centre, we assigned on Conservation IG member to a group of 3..

On our way there, it was getting cloudy..

But we made there on time.. and coke was already there by then!

Eco Flea Market

“Eco Flea Market… is the time to give your items that you have no use for, a chance for a new lease of life!

You will be doing a great favour to the needy families and to our environment as these collected items will be collected by the needy families and / or donated to charity organizations during this event.

Please rest assure that this event will not involve any form of selling.

A series of collections will be carried out and in the following methods:

Method One: To deposit at our Collection Booth every Friday (4, 11, 18 & 25th July @ 12:15 – 1:15pm / 4:30 – 5:30pm)

Method Two: To deposit at SAS Office (E1, Level 7) Anytime (Just knock on our door and ask for Rachel/Temp Staffs)

Method Three**: Happening on 12 July (Sat), a team will be despatched around Singapore to your homes to collect your items.For those who have signed up, we shall contact you really soon, so look out for our email :) See you all soon, registration is now closed.

A treasure hunt is to allow RP students to learn and appreciate plants found in Admiralty park through fun activities like an amazing race and treasure hunt. Students form teams to participate and have to find clues from the plants’ identity and have to learn to recognize the plants and their uses to finish the treasure hunt.

“Waste to Wow”: participants will make use of recyclable materials to create something innovative. A short product description will also be submitted to relate the product to “conservation”. These products will be displayed in our library to raise awareness on the importance of recycling and creative ways to recycle. To encourage more submission of quality “Waste to Wow” products, this event is designed as a competition where the products will be judged on the artistic and functional value.

Lights out competition Aug 08 (Part Of Our Conservation Month in RP)

In an attempt to promote the message of energy conservation, RP has been advocating a lights out day on the last Thursdays of every month. For conservation month, we are having a inter class competition for the whole of July for the class which supports the lights out movement. Participants are to switch off the lights when they don’t need it during the break outs and if their classes are near the windows. There will be judging criterias to adhere by and a judging panel will do regular surveys to determine the winning classes.

As part of our 6th annual conservation month in July, we are organizing an Eco Flea Market for our staff and students. Based on a planet saving concept with the key objective of waste minimization, this event aims to galvanize the efforts of RP staff and students to contribute items which are of no use to them and too “good” to throw away. We are encouraging people to contribute items that are almost brand new and in good working condition, so that others can have a chance to own those items.

The items that are collected over a one month period are then put up at an Eco Flea market where fellow RP staff and students are welcome to take items which may be of good use to them. We wish to share the message of “passing it on”; exchanging unwanted items for things which are needed. This way we can minimize having to purchase new items and at the same time make maximize the potential of “unwanted” items instead of having to throw them away.

Zoo Trip - 3 March 2008

Eco Flea Market

Basically, this event will involve the various IGs like bazaar IG, and it will encourage the use of less waste; like instead of packaging the items to be sold, the plastic bag can be saved. It is also to encourage people to use more “green” bags instead of plastic bags. Even the floor mat used is a towel, so plastic floor mats will not go to waste.

It is also to show people that, in order to gain something, money is not always needed. And from this flea market, we can also save money by being eco friendly. Eco friendliness does not always need to be expensive, nor need to spend money. It is just a little effort, can not only go a long way, but can also save the environment in the long run too. In that way we can have a nicer environment to live in, resources will not be depleted so quickly, and so we can still bring it forth to the next generation.

What Is CE?

CE is a module where it works like your CCA points that you have had in probably secondary school.

The difference is that there is a minimum requirement of 40 points, 10 Diploma active (DA)and 30 non- diploma active (NDA)

The main points that will really help you are DA, NDA, DP ( Diploma Passive).

You have to complete them within the 3 years of your study here in RP.

It is better to complete it in year one so you will have time for your other necessary modules.

So.. need help? Conservation IG will be able to help you fulfill it; by joining us, and planning the events, we are sure you will easily complete your points!

Xmas Tree Event

The objective of this event is to create the awareness of recycling to the people around us.

And such things as recycled materials can be made into something meaningful like the Christmas tree.And recycled does not mean that it is no longer useful nor ugly. It still can be turned into something more beautiful.

This event is also brought to the less fortunate people who do not have the chance to receive the real meaning of Christmas compared to those who are more fortunate.
And thus, this is to show that recycling can be fun and all together, helped to remind us to celebrate together with those who do not have a chance to celebrate Christmas.

Conservation Month (July)

The objectives for this month, is to make sure people understand the meaning of what conservation is and the importance of conservation activities.

In this conservation month, students can participate together to do some conservation activities like collecting plastic bottles which have been prepared by the conservation IG ourselves.

And there are also other activities like the RP lights out day. Hence, by doing this activity, this is to show that conservation can actually be fun and that everyone can have a part to play and participate.

And to those students who likes to sit down and listen. There are also talks available for them. And this talk is to educate them about conservation.

There will be one major upcoming community event that we will be holding, which is the 100,000 bottle collection where we will be collaborating with the neighbourhood secondary schools.

Our aim is to create awareness of recycling, and the beauty of it.

Lastly, this conservation month is to educate and make known to people that conservation is not only about reduce, reuse and recycle things like papers and plastics, but things like conserving energy, water and also protecting the life of wildlife animals and other animals too are also part of conservation.

SLA Fiesta: IG fair

The SLA event is basically to make people understand more about our conservation IG and what are all the upcoming events that are coming, plus how many CE points that can actually be collected by joining this IG.

At the same time, this is to promote mostly the year 1s into joining this IG. However, the year 2s are also welcome into joining this IG. The more the merrier! Well, most importantly to make sure that the meaning of conservation and conserving is kept in one’s mind. (=

There will also activities that can be done at our booth too
