RP Spreads Christmas Cheer at Woodlands Community Centre

A bevy of people filled the Woodlands Community Centre on 16 December 2007 to attend the Education and Welfare Fund Bursary Presentation 2007 organised by Woodlands CCC.

The event was graced by Woodlands MP, Ms Ellen Lee, who presented the bursaries to the recipients. The Education and Welfare Fund Bursary is meant to provide financial assistance to needy and meritorious students residing in Woodlands.

In a bid to spread the joy of Christmas and in view that old toys can still be recycled when children outgrow them, Republic Polytechnic (RP) set up a Toy Library. The RP’s Toy Library is an initiative of the conservation movement at RP. It aims to provide children from less affluent families in the neighborhood with toys that they would otherwise not be able to afford. Hence, used toys can be conserved and “recycled” for a good cause. Spearheading this project, RP’s Conservation Interest Group (IG) collected old toys through donations. Out of the hundreds of toys generously donated by RP staff and members of the public in the past 5 months, about a hundred toys were handpicked and cleaned by the students and staff from the Conservation IG before being wrapped as presents for the children from lower income families, and given to them after the Bursary presentation.

The IG hopes that this effort will reduce the quantity of recyclable toys being sent to incineration plants, and aims to build an environmentally-conscious mindset in our students who were involved in cleaning the toys.

This project was jointly organized by Woodlands CCC and Republic Polytechnic, and made possible by the following Conservation IG students and staff advisors from the School of Applied Science:

Students: WONG JUN MING; EISHA BTE DADLANI; UTBA BIN MAHMOOD; TAN TING TING /DBMS; WOO CHIN CHENG; NURUL NURASHIKIN BTE JA'AFAR; TEO JIN YE; CHOO ZINING; MUHAMMAD FAREEZAL B MOHAMED I; SOH ZHI HAO; SABRINA CHOO; Ariffin; NUR AZIEANI; ARIFIN; LIONG ZHI WEI MARK; SUM YUHENG; Tan Han Keat; SHAZRINA BTE DAUD

Woodlands Healthy Lifestyle cum Green Environment Day

To create awareness and the importance of staying healthy, Northwest
Community Development Council organized “Woodlands Healthy Lifestyle cum
Green Environment Day” on the 2nd September 2007. Twelve SAS students jumped
at the opportunity to do their bit for the environment by walking into the heartlands
and reaching to the residents personally. Advice on how to save the earth
like using less electricity and bringing a reusable bag to shopping trips
were passed to the Woodlands residents after encouraging them to make
their own pledge to save the earth. To reward residents for their participation
and support, the students handed out a special RP reusable bag for every pledge made.

Happy faces were seen at the booth as the residents not only made
their commitment to help our dying earth but also walk away
with a reusable bag which will help them reduce the use of
plastic bags. The highlight of the day was when Miss Ellen Lee,
MP for Sembawang GRC (Woodlands) came to the booth and not
only made her own pledge, but also interacted with the students,
giving them a boost of encouragement to continue their efforts to
influence more people to conserve the environment.

In addition to the pledging and bag-giving activity, students also
encouraged residents to donate their unwanted toys for the needy
children in Woodlands. Residents were very supportive and at the
end of the four-hour event, a total of twelve large bags of toys were
collected! This was certainly great news not only for the students but
also the hundreds of needy children who would enjoy playing
with these toys in time for the festive season.

The event would not have been a success
without the help of the twelve SAS student helpers,
and advisors Grace Tan and Serena Seah.

Launch of Project Minus3Million Plastic Bags on Bring Your Own Bag Day (BYOBD)

On 6 June 07, some 280 Republic Polytechnic (RP) students promoted the monthly Bring Your Own Bag Day (BYOBD) by giving away 4,500 free reusable bags to heartlanders at three supermarkets in Woodlands vicinity.

These students, enthusiastic in their effort to contribute towards the conservation of the environment, were ready and confident to face any members of the public not keen to embrace the idea of using reusable bags and that plastic bags are now gaining notoriety as environmental-pests.

To students' surprise, they gathered positive affirmations from the public - made up of heartlanders from different backgrounds and age groups. The frequent requests for a pledge on reducing the use of plastic bags and filling up a survey were greeted with friendly nods and approachable gestures.

The students managed to educate the public on the hazards of having an over-accumulation of disposed plastic bags. However, some students still encountered those who insisted on using plastic bags and indicated the inconvenience of using a reusable bag. With much persuasion, their objections turned to concurrence when they were given the attractive yellow RP reusable bag; they pledged to reduce their use of plastic bags.

The pledge - Project Minus3Million Plastic Bags - was undeniably a success as it showed how mindsets can be changed when presented with hopes of an environmentally positive future; it also highlighted that efforts of a few who cared about the environment can propagate a community to do their bid for a greener environment for our future generations.

Imagine this, if you use 6 plastic bags less every week, as reiterated in the RP pledge cards, Singapore may collectively have reduced 3 million plastic bags a day. The mere thought of how one person’s endeavour (or not) may account for something significant stand testimony to the fact that all of us can make a difference.

When this event was over, there were many people beaming with pride with RP's yellow reusable bags slinging on their arms.

This event was supported by Conservation Interest Group (IG), Chiron Club, School of Applied Science (SAS) students and staff. SAS staff who has contributed significantly to this event are Grace Tan, Dr Tan Lay Pheng, Lisa Kavita Rajah, Serena Seah, Dawn Ong, Michelle Tan, Rina Loh, and Foo Yong Zhi.

Republic Polytechnic's Eco Picnic 2007

On 18 November 2007, Republic Polytechnic (RP) organized
the first ever Eco-Picnic in Singapore at Admiralty Park
(next to RP) in conjunction with Clean and Green
Singapore (CGS) North West - Come out and play,
its no TV day!

The Eco-Picnic hoped to convey, in a fun way, an environmental
message to promote a green and healthy lifestyle.
It also aimed to foster strong social bonding by
bringing families and communities together. Families
were encouraged to conserve as creatively as possible
by, for instance, minimizing the use of disposable utensils.
They were also invited to share their ideas on how
to plan a planet-saving picnic. At the end of the day,
the public served as a platform and a starting
point for going green.

Blessed with good weather, the event saw more than 200
families turning up for the picnic which
was graced by the following Guests-of-Honor :

Mr Lim Swee Say
Minister, Prime Minister’s Office & MP for
Holland-Bukit Timah GRC

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan
Minister for Community Development,
Youth & Sports
Second Minister for Information,
Communication and the Arts
& MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC

Dr Teo Ho Pin
Mayor of North West District &
MP for Bukit Panjang Constituency

Dr Mohamad Maliki Osman
Parliamentary Secretary,
Ministry of National Development
& MP for Sembawang GRC

Mr Liang Eng Hwa
MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC

Ms Ellen Lee Geck Hoon
MP for Sembawang GRC

RP staff and students lined up a series of
exciting games and activities for the picnic goers.
These included highlights such as the Eco-Picnic
Competition, Green Hike around the Admiralty Park,
Eco Flea Market, Green Game Stations,
the Republic Polytechnic’s Conservation Booth,
children’s colouring competition,
exciting performances, street magic by RP
students and many more. Each of these
activities aimed to educate the public on
how they can do their part for the environment.

For the Eco-Picnic Competition, picnic goers
were judged on how “green” their picnic setups
were. It was heartening to see families coming
with reusables like reusable bags, using
environmentally friendly utensils, thermoses,
plastic containers instead of plastic or
styrofoam disposables. The winner for the
competition were Ms Deepa d/om Chandran Pillai
and Mdm Siti Kartin Binte Kamis who went
home with cash prizes of $300 and $200 each
respectively. Special mention goes to Mdm Siti
who walked all the way from home to Admiralty Park!
In line with the green theme, she also came
decked in green (green picnic mat, green
clothes, containers and even a green umbrella!).

The Eco-picnic serves as a starting point to encourage
Singaporeans to go green in their daily lives. We hope
this picnic has been one with a difference. Do
look out for upcoming “green” events
organized by Conservation Interest
Group of Republic Polytechnic!

We would also like to express our thanks to
Hitchins (FE) Marketing Pte Ltd for
sponsoring the prizes for Republic
Polytechnic’s Eco Picnic 2007.
