Woodlands Healthy Lifestyle cum Green Environment Day

To create awareness and the importance of staying healthy, Northwest
Community Development Council organized “Woodlands Healthy Lifestyle cum
Green Environment Day” on the 2nd September 2007. Twelve SAS students jumped
at the opportunity to do their bit for the environment by walking into the heartlands
and reaching to the residents personally. Advice on how to save the earth
like using less electricity and bringing a reusable bag to shopping trips
were passed to the Woodlands residents after encouraging them to make
their own pledge to save the earth. To reward residents for their participation
and support, the students handed out a special RP reusable bag for every pledge made.

Happy faces were seen at the booth as the residents not only made
their commitment to help our dying earth but also walk away
with a reusable bag which will help them reduce the use of
plastic bags. The highlight of the day was when Miss Ellen Lee,
MP for Sembawang GRC (Woodlands) came to the booth and not
only made her own pledge, but also interacted with the students,
giving them a boost of encouragement to continue their efforts to
influence more people to conserve the environment.

In addition to the pledging and bag-giving activity, students also
encouraged residents to donate their unwanted toys for the needy
children in Woodlands. Residents were very supportive and at the
end of the four-hour event, a total of twelve large bags of toys were
collected! This was certainly great news not only for the students but
also the hundreds of needy children who would enjoy playing
with these toys in time for the festive season.

The event would not have been a success
without the help of the twelve SAS student helpers,
and advisors Grace Tan and Serena Seah.
